No virus scanner purchased example:

Enable External Virus Check:
Check this box to enable command line virus checking. You can use any virus scanner as long as it offers a command line interface.

Command Line:
Enter the command line for the virus checker. It should consist of the path to the executable program to run plus any additional command line arguments. SMTPMax will add a final command line argument consisting of the path to the directory where an extracted file attachment (or attachments) may be found. If the virus program removes any files from the directory, then the email will be considered virus infected and will be discarded.

Enable Internal Virus Check:
Check this box to enable either Avast or Sophos.

Recursion Depth (Sophos ONLY):
When encountering MIME email with nested contents, this controls how deeply into the nesting that the virus scanner will scan.

File Types

Avast! - You may choose to scan the following:
a. Full file - More than 8k of the file is examined for viruses
b. All files - Files other than .exe files and libraries are tested. NOTE: Only the first 8K of the file tested.
c. Test all fully - Full contents of all files are examined

Sophos - You may choose to scan DOS files, Macintosh files or both.

 Virus Actions Tab

These are the settings to control how Avast! and Sophos will handle detected viruses.

Alert to the following address

Sends an email notifying that a virus has been detected to the specified address.

Quarantine
Inbound and/or outbound mail containing viruses will be sent to the email address specified for later inspection or destruction.

Notify Sender
An email alert will be sent to the sender of the virus.

Notify Recipient
An email alert will be sent to the recipient of the virus.

Attempt to Disinfect
An attempt will be made to remove the virus from the transferred executable and then it will be passed on through as "cleaned."

 Enabling Anti-Virus Protection

Now you are ready to enable internal virus checking, there are two ways to do this:

1. Individual user: Enable each user.
2. Domain wide: Enable all users in a domain.

Simply edit a user and check 'Enable Internal Virus Check'.

Domain Wide:

1. Open the MailMax Admin.
2. Expand the Connection Manager.
3. Click the Lightning Bolt.

IMPORTANT: You MUST restart SMTPMax in order to complete the installation.

 Automatic Virus Definition Updates

SMTPMax automatically checks for virus definition updates from Avast! and Sophos. You can set how often MailMax checks for new definitions daily, hourly and/or every time SMTPMax is restarted.

Note: While mail continues being received, the "back-end" processing that delivers mail is suspended while SMTPMax checks for updates. It is recommended that you check every 24 or 48 hours, not every hour.

1. Open the MailMax Admin.
2. Go to Edit/Local Settings and then to the Anti-Virus Tab.

Check Daily at:

The time of day is used as the time to check for updates.
